This is an old one (not only does the phone have a cord, it also has a rotary dial!), yet somehow it still holds true. Especially since today is the last Sunday of the month...and we're doing our home teaching today.

...maybe a little later, then?

Training ground
A lot of folks were worried about how the construction would impact BYU football games, since University Avenue is one of the main thoroughfares leading to the stadium. We came up with announcements for the stadium, ads for the radio and newspapers, and we really didn't mess things up that much. It also gave some good material for a few cartoon strips.

And now a word from their sponsor
As we bid a fond farewell to the Beijing Games, we certainly must acknowledge at least one of the folks who made it all possible.

Watch your step
One time when we visited an ancient temple in Korea, the monks took us on a "behind the scenes" tour. It was pretty cool to see some of the stuff the normal tourists didn't see...like the really sweet motorcycle that was hidden behind a couple of the buildings on the compound.

Monday sketchbook: more Olympics
This happened to me during my junior year in high school - I'd toss my cookies after every race. My coach suggested that i eat a peanut butter sandwich right before I ran, so I gave that idea a try. It didn't work, but at least it tasted better!

Part Vulcan, maybe?
Since these Not Quite Zen cartoons are running in honor of the Olympics, we need to include a little physical confrontation, right?

Enlightenment
Zen paintings are about catching the essence of the subject. These cartoons, therefore, are not just sketches. They are meant to catch the essence of the moment... but remember, they are Not Quite Zen.

You've tried scrubbing it out...
I got in trouble for this one from a mental health specialist who wasn't a fan of alternative therapy.

Monday sketchbook: Twilight revisited

This could have happened in our ward...and probably would have if Bro. Moore would have thought about it!

Meanwhile, back in Provo...
Actually, they found some pretty cool stuff during the excavation, like some old trolley tracks in the middle of the Center Street intersection that weren't on any of the maps. That drew a lot of crowds downtown. Some of the merchants suggested we bury more stuff to be uncovered every block or so to keep people coming. We also accidentally discovered a gas line near 800 North. That was kind of exciting too, but in a different way.

By special request

Gary suggested I do a cartoon about the Packers vs. Favre controversy...starring Gary...in his Packers jersey.
You owe me, dude!

Breaking twilight

When my wife finished reading Breaking Dawn around two o'clock Sunday morning, she told me that I had to run this particular cartoon that I did about ten years ago. I had been saving it to run in October. Apparently it's one of those Twilight things: if you get it, you get it.

Monday sketchbook: an inconvenient truth
Some people are less receptive to missionaries than others. It's unfortunate, because they're usually nice guys. I never had anything quite this bad, but there was one incident that included a batch of nasty, old rice...

Just one more piece of ID, then
I love it when my worlds collide!DMV in Oregon (which is part of the Department of Transportation) is now requiring proof of citizenship and Social Security number for everyone. It's caused problems for a few people. So I thought, why stop at requiring a birth certificate? Bring in those family group sheets!

Parks 5: The maze
There's a story behind this one. When I was putting this book together, Zach was really in to mazes. I had him help me with this one. I believe that it's his first published work.I think that the tent is the solution. I think...

Parks 4: Gather 'round the campfire
There are lots of differences in these two pictures. Some are subtle, some are not. And I have to say, this kind of drawing is a lot easier to do using a computer! Personally, I like the bat/bird switch. We're doing a campfire with the Webelos Cub Scouts tonight. We'll probably see few bats!
