It may sting just a little

Remember, remember

Here's one from a couple of years ago that has a thought worth repeating.

That would be a lot of Cheerios!

Just think of how many Nursery-aged kids could fit into the Conference Center!

There and back again

Today is Tolkien Reading Day, an obscure commemorative day to encourage reading, specifically reading of the works of JRR Tolkien. At the Oregon DOT, we've seized upon this as a day that we can geek out and share our transportation-related messages.

This year we're focusing on alternative transportation — biking, walking, riding the bus or the train. And who better to exemplify this than the Hobbit himself, Bilbo Baggins? In his many adventures he used all sorts of transportation modes. So grab a book and hop on a train and enjoy the day!

Heading in to conference

This seemed appropriate with the NCAA Tournament underway and General Conference just around the corner...

Service is as service does

I'm afraid I may have been on the contributing end of one of these just a couple of days ago. It's the thought that counts, right?

Sketchbook: It's a seasonal thing

Welcome  to the first day of spring! For some, that means allergy season is here! Woot!

Another sign of spring is that General Conference is just around the corner. That means that Mormon Cartoonist Arie Van De Graaff has his semi-annual General Conference Activity Packet available for download (now in three languages!).  Check it out!

Comparisons

General Conference talks have to be vetted by a correlations committee before they're ready for prime time. That same vetting process doesn't happen on the ward level — you never know what you're going to get!

Sketchbook: Rounding it up

This is another one that's drawn from real life experiences. I've mentioned before that I work with engineers. Accuracy is paramount with them. It gets a little uncomfortable when I tell them that it's OK to round numbers up or down so they make more sense to the public.

Balance to the Force

The Powers That Be (my family, mostly) have limited me to one of these alphabet gags per year, and that only during my self-proclaimed Geek Week.

Until next year!

It's all about the base

It's that dreaded time of year again! Geek Week, the week approaching Pi Day, in which we dump our bad STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) jokes in one fell swoop! The good news is, it's only one week. Enjoy!

Editor's note: Just a quick word about today's cartoon — the original caption had the girl choosing to change majors rather than deal with the harassment she receives from her peer. That was a little too close to the unfortunate reality, and not at all empowering to women who are interesting in pursuing the sciences as a career. I like this result better: it shows the social awkwardness of many males in the field (I work with engineers on a daily basis, remember), and the woman simply carries on with what she's doing.

So, yeah, sometimes a lot of thought goes into these cartoons. Go figure!

Out cold

It's unusual for us here in Oregon to have snow days from school. It's even more rare for us to have them in March. Last night it snowed enough — up to 12 inches in some places — that school was cancelled yet again.

When I drove past the high school this afternoon, though, the track team and the baseball team were both out there practicing!

Sketchbook: Many meetings

When Alma met the sons of Mosiah on the road between Gideon and Zarahemla, they met with joy. But remember, these were guys...

Before the journey's through...

I noticed that when I have missionaries in a car, the car is almost always red. I wonder if that's because our local missionaries drive a red Toyota?

Versatility

It takes a special skill to work pop culture references into a spiritual discussion.
