Sketchbook: Muffled fashion sense.

Usually when I have something that I share from my sacrament meeting notes, I have to exaggerate a bit or embellish the wording just a bit. This, however, is a direct quote from one of the talks at church yesterday.

And, yes, the mask did complete the ensemble.

What did one hashtag say to the other hashtag?

We had a similar conversation at our dinner table — when should we stop using #GiveThanks and switch over to #LightTheWorld? Can we use both concurrently?

We have very important theological discussions around our dinner table.

Did we run this through spell check?

Today's gag comes from faithful reader Vernie C. Which means you can blame him, not me.

Another thing I'm thankful for...

Haven't you loved the #GiveThanks campaign? If it weren't for #LightTheWorld coming up soon, I'd be really sad to see the initiative end!

Happy Thanksgiving! As for me and my house, we're eating in waves.

Orders is orders

Our governor is very good at sounding like a stern mom. People grumble, but they wear their masks.

Not the Sketchbook: A rerun

I got a LOT of feedback last week that the sketch should be taken to the finish. Normally I'd put that into the "let's do this later" file. But since it's the holidays, I thought I might as well flesh it out.

#GiveThanks

If you haven't listened to Pres. Nelson's message yet, stop what you're doing and go listen. It's only 12 minutes long, but there's a lot in those 12 minutes.

It comes with stuffing

You'd never guess that I was reading the news when this idea showed up in my sketches. I should know better.

Dinner, turkey style

I kind of feel the same way about sweet potatoes and candied yams. Why do people get excited for those?

That'll clean you out

I don't remember if I was awake or asleep when this thought popped into my mind: "How would the French Chef — Julia Child — prepare a turkey this Thanksgiving? I just wish there was a way to write the caption in her accent!

Sketchbook: It's in the details

This comes out of my notes from our sacrament meeting yesterday. We had some outstanding messages, and this one stood out.

There's the saying that "the devil is in the details." I submit that that's wrong. If you consider the details — especially in nature — that's where you'll see the handiwork of God.

Quarantined turkeys and shameless promotion

Remember back in the spring when we thought we'd have a wave of the coronavirus and then life would be back to normal? Who thought we'd still be wearing face coverings at the holidays?

Let's be safe out there!

Speaking of holidays, gift-giving season is fast approaching!

I heartily recommend "Giblets and Gravy Blues" as a Thanksgiving gift, "That's No Moon" and "That's One Small Step for a Mom, One Giant Leap for Missionarykind" for any special occasion! Each is chock full of chuckles, and is the perfect size for mailing to your missionary or stuffing in a stocking! Order your copies today — and grab a few for gifting as well!

Veterans Day 2020

Thank you to all those who have served in the military and who are currently serving.

When we visited Normandy a few years ago, we had the chance to visit the American Cemetery there. Rows upon rows of white markers are a grim reminder of the price that was paid to liberate Europe.

More sobering and more poignant was the visit to the German Cemetery nearby. Rather than the smooth white crosses, their crosses are of rough hewn black stone. The markers tell the story of many who were cut down in their teens. The thing that moved me the most, however, is the care that is given to the graves of those who were the enemy. Their sacrifice — willing or unwilling — is not forgotten. The flags of the Allied nations fly outside, and flying alongside them is the flag of Germany.

It's a lesson we could learn today: Love your enemies. We're all in this thing together; let's try to get along.

Looks like some of us will be spending a little more time doing church at home.

Sketchbook: Final Jeopardy

It's a bit bittersweet to say goodbye to Alex Trebek. He was the face of Jeopardy! for many years — but his career was much more than that. My mom loved him as the host of High Rollers, and he hosted several other game shows.

It seems like he took the place of Walter Cronkite as the "most trusted man in America" (although he was born in Canada). If he had announced the results of the presidential election, there wouldn't be the controversy!

What will happen to Jeopardy! now? We shall see. Godspeed, Mr. Trebek!

Sketchbook: It's the final countdown

The election season is almost over! No more debates! No more attack ads! No more stacks of cards, fliers and brochures clogging up my mailbox! All that's left is the counting — and the inevitable complaining about the results (whatever they may be!).

I've already voted, have you!
