Light the World: Freely Give

Welcome to Light the World with Love! Today's prompt is to freely give, with the suggestion of visiting a Giving Machine near you.

If you aren't near one physically, you can go online and contribute. I think one year we really did buy a goat; another year we bought a beehive. There are lots of ways to give. But most of all, give from your heart.

Have a wonderful Christmas season!

Sketchbook: Survey says...

Yes, it's usually a good idea to talk to your ministering brothers or sisters or else the elders quorum or Relief Society presidencies first. Even if your bishop is amazing, like ours.

For Emily and her mom

A short time ago I was contacted by the daughter of one of my friends from college who remembered her mom telling her about my cartoons from back in the day. That reminded me of a series I did way back then about Thanksgiving, and this one in particular about going back to school after the holiday.

Image scanning technology has improved a lot in the ensuing years, so the resolution on this isn't what I would like it to be. But it was a fun trip down memory lane! Not only that, it reminded me of the time I flew Turkish Air — and they gave us turkey sandwiches for the in-flight meal!

A holiday for thanks

Thanksgiving is an awesome holiday! When else, really, does the entire country take time to focus on gratitude — at least in theory!

I hope your Thanksgiving is wonderful!

Sketchbook: It was a letdown

I tried mixing turkeys with fairy tales and got some interesting results.

By special request

Here's Monday's sketchbook, fully realized as a cartoon.

Thanks for the feedback!

Illegal use of fans

As I was drawing this, the gag seemed somehow familiar. Some quick research revealed why: it's similar to one I did with zombies playing church basketball! The big difference is in the spelling. Gotta love homonyms!

Found this recipe on Pinterest for a Thanksgiving side

I think there are plenty of people — myself included — who would be more than happy to help get the squash ready using this method!

Raise the song of Harvest Home

Maybe it's just me, but I think these turkeys look like they could have come from the pen of the Ward Cartoonist, Arie Van De Graaff — who incidentally has a new book out, just in time for the holidays! It's the Old Testament Come, Follow Me Activity Book. If you're a Primary teacher, youth teacher, parent, grandparent, or all on your own, this would be a great gift to supplement your Come, Follow Me studies! Heck, I'll bet even the Elders Quorum would get a kick out of using it!

And if you're looking for that perfect yet inexpensive Thanksgiving gift, look no further than Tastes Good with Giblets and Gravy Blues — a collection of my Thanksgiving-themed cartoons. And it's non-denominational; I'm saving the LDS cartoons for other nefarious purposes. Stay tuned!

The show must go on, mustn't it?

How many bad jokes can one squeeze into a cartoon?

Sketchbook: Special fast

As I sat in Sunday school class a few weeks ago, I wondered what it would be like to be in a ward full of turkeys? Hey, there are worse things I could think about! This is one of the better ideas I came up with.

Keep an eye out for him

OK, I have to say I enjoyed drawing this one. You can see I had some indecision on what the pirate symbol should be: a wishbone or a turkey skull?

I'm also kind of proud of the parrot on his shoulder. It made more sense than a monkey!

One ring to rule them all

OK, it takes a long time to get there — to the punch line.

It's probably counterfeit

Word to the wise: don't buy your turkey on the black market. Not a good idea.

Yeah, it's a clean joke

That's gotta be a special kind of marinade.

Sketchbook: Another round of crayons, please

Forget the fancy linens and ornate tableware. Give me a paper tablecloth and a packet of crayons and I'm a happy diner!

Ready to face the future

The fall time change is one of the best Sundays of the year. That extra hour of sleep certainly helps — although you can count on certain families to still be late for church!

I'd buy that

Ever notice how certain rooms in the church have their own, individual scent?

I recognize that face

I went back and forth about using these guys or the guys from Among Us for this gag. The more I think about it, the more I think this should have stayed in the sketchbook!

Sketchbook: The day after

With yesterday being both Sunday and Halloween, our family had a conversation about the appropriateness of wearing a costume to church. And, no, the bishop didn't dress up like a zombie — but he sure looked like he could use a nap!
