Tell me what the papers say

It can be a scary world out there. Be careful, and have a safe and happy Halloween!

From a distance

Some day, this will all be a distancing memory.

It's the missionaries, Charlie Brown!

One of my favorite things about the Great Pumpkin is that it was in part inspired by missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Charles Schulz's daughter Amy joined the Church and served as a missionary. He created several strips in which Linus' experiences going door to door parallel those of his daughter.

And that's what the Great Pumpkin is all about, Charlie Brown!

Planning ahead for the holiday

It's an idea that has merit. It could work well — until someone brings you a mouse!

So, yes, the other girl is wearing her Ruth Bader Ginsburg costume (probably another big seller this year). And any resemblance that the cat bearer wears to our sweet little Sophie is purely coincidental.

Sketchbook: How accurate does this need to be?

I can imagine that there are going to be a lot of COVID costumes this Halloween.

Caption contest winner: Both sides now

At last! It's what you've been waiting for: the winner of our caption contest!

The winning caption was submitted by the outstanding Kelly S. Our esteemed panel of judges selected her entry from among about two dozen other entries!

As the winner, Kelly will get a copy of That's No Moon — and the adulation of many!

There were a lot of great ideas. The judges laughed out loud at many of them. Thanks to all of you who entered!

Breakfast of champions

This is an update/variation on an old one I drew years ago. It never felt quite right — this one works much better in my opinion.

Now we can all sleep better.

It's an old family recipe

It's true. Missionaries will eat practically anything!

It's no trick: it's a caption contest! What a treat!

I was upgrading this old sketchbook idea when my wife came in and said, "Oh! I like this! What's the caption?"

Before I could answer, she started throwing out ideas of her own — and some of them were pretty funny!

Then she said, "Why don't you make this a caption contest? If I came up with ideas that were funny, imagine what your readers could do!"

So, here's your chance! Send in your ideas for a caption! Email, comment, message, tell me in person.

The winner not only gets his or her caption used and name in print, she or he could also win a copy of That's No Moon! my COVID-19 cartoon collection. Enter early, enter often! The winner will be announced on Saturday.

Sketchbook: Common ground

So this weekend we had a virtual stake conference. Our stake president gave a wonderful message about service, using an example from Disneyland. While he spoke, I had this image pop into my brain and into my sketchbook.

So, technically, I should give our stake president co-authoring credit. But I don't think he wants it.

Dawn of the living undead

Haven't you felt that way after a day packed with Skype, Zoom and Teams meetings?

Saving your sweet smile

Our state health authority says that trick or treating is highly discouraged this year. If you do go, use hand sanitizer — and please wear a mask!

Take out

Social distancing really bites. Unless you're a vampire — then it makes it so you can't bite!

Social distancing used to be a lot more fun.

You're not on the list

I guess this is one way of saying that there are a lot of people who could use prayers right now. There's so much going on that sometimes it feels like there's too much to do. Prayer is something that can help, and it isn't that hard to to do.

It certainly can't hurt!

Heart to heart

October always turns my mind to family history. I don't know why... I wonder if Dr. Frankenstein has something to do with it?

As with the voice of thunder

This picture looks suspiciously like me and my brother hightailing it for home — only it was usually my dad doing the hollering!

There are yearbook photos that I'm never going to share with my posterity!

General Conference sketch notes

What an amazing General Conference! I've got to go through my notes and review the talks again, there was just so much!

And I'm pretty sure we got a couple of homework assignments we need to do — or at least I need to!

If you're interested, get the downloadable file of October General Conference notes. They're good for review, as a family or on your own. Enjoy!

Oh, it is on!

Be sure to watch or listen to General Conference today and tomorrow!

I'll be updating this site with my sketch notes throughout the day Saturday and Sunday, and I'll have a compilation available early Monday morning.

See you at conference!
