Easter celebration

On one hand, it doesn't seem fair that Easter falls on a fast Sunday this year. On the other hand, it seems totally appropriate to approach Easter in an attitude of fasting. Either way, happy Easter to you!

Here's a link to a wonderful video, "He is Risen."

Saved by science

It's bad enough to have bunnies steal your eggs, but then they vandalize them too boot! It's just not right!

Psst!

You can't just pick up your Easter eggs on any ol' street corner...

Counting toeses

A variation on a common theme, I know. It might just be me, but does anyone else think this when they hear that song?

All have gifts...

I need to point out that the name does not refer to any one person specifically...but I'm pretty sure you can name the person in your own ward that could fulfill the role.

And the envelope, please...

One of the most exciting -- and terrifying -- moments of a young missionary's life!

Mail call

Waiting to receive your mission call is one of the hardest things about going on a mission. You, your friends and your family speculate on where you might go. But you never know for sure until that envelope comes!

My call was about two weeks late. We finally called the Missionary Department to see if there was a problem. Everything was fine, they assured us, there was just a hold up with that particular batch. Aaargh!

Smile!

One of the teachers at the high school asked me to make this into a meme for her. It may nudge into the PG area just a little, but it is true!

Monday Sketchbook: Smoke signals

Sometimes the penmanship gets really bad in my sketchbook. Sometimes the ideas are really bad, too -- although this idea certainly would liven up some of those early morning meetings!

Madness is coming

Selection Sunday for the Big Dance is tomorrow. How is your team positioned? Personally, I'm thinking NIT.

Hold the line

In the old days I would've added, "...and it's long distance!"

Life of Pi

Happy Pi Day! Go celebrate and buy yourself a pie...or two! Or wait until July 22 and celebrate Approximation Day. Either way, enjoy!

It's futile

I tried to warn you. Geek Week may not be pretty.

Today's cartoon honors Dr. Georg Ohm and Ohm's Law, which describes electrical resistance. I'm sorry.

Somewhere beyond the stars

Welcome to the Beckstrom Buzz's first ever Geek Week. Actually, it's only a half-week, stretching from Douglas Adams' birthday to Pi Day on the 14th. The next few days, the cartoons I post here are going to be, well, geeky (as opposed to the rest of the time, right?). There's a good chance that they'll only appeal to a very small segment of the population.

For example, today's cartoon is set in an area in the far reaches of our solar system, the Kuiper Belt. It's similar to the asteroid belt, but on beyond Neptune. Add to that the Loch Ness Monster and what do you get?

Monday Sketchbook: Quote of the week

I had a helping hand with this one, but not from my apprentice. This one came from the mind (and the lips) of my dear spouse! I won't say the circumstance, but it was very appropriate at the time!

Savings plan

At work people were talking about how they'll sleep in on Sunday, then try to go to bed a little earlier Sunday night so they can wake up on time to be at work by 8 on Monday morning. Whereas I, on the other hand, get to wake up an hour earlier Sunday morning so I can start meetings at what feels to my body like 5:30 a.m. How is that fair?

Saturday, March 9, 2013

Hey, what time is it?

Oh, yeah. Gotta love that time change that helps us get even less sleep! Remember to change your clocks tonight!

Serve where you're planted

The original sketch for this just had two kids, but then I realized there was a family I know who probably actually would play missionary! Apologies to Corbyn, 'cause I couldn't work his name in there, too!

Little visitors

As missionaries, we seldom had people knock on our door. When we did, it was usually the milk lady, the old lady selling sesame oil, the take out delivery guy or the little kids in the neighborhood messing around.

What are the odds?

The most nerve-wracking part for anyone who is awaiting a call -- the speculation between submitting your papers and receiving your call. And everyone has an opinion!

Sliding

I couldn't let the resignation of the Pope pass without saying anything, could I?

This cartoon reminds me of some elders from my mission who liked to extend P-Day for as long as possible. P-Day was on Monday, so Sunday nights were "sliding into P-Day" time. The transition back to proselyting on Monday evenings was a little slow. You get the idea. So did the Mission President, who gave them a talking to that was perhaps a little more stern than this one.
