When Black Friday Comes

To me, the Black Friday sales are the perfect excuse to sleep in. I'm especially happy to be avoiding the sales that started Thursday night. It's kind of scary to think that by the time this posts at 5:03 in the morning, some people could already be done with their Christmas shopping. Yikes!

I'm struck by a rather odd question -- does Canada have Black Friday sales? Do they start today, or is it the Friday after Canadian Thanksgiving back in October? Hmm.

Preparing to give thanks

I hear from the elders in our area that this is a concern.

In the field

Fellow cartoonist Arie Van De Graaff posted a gag about Thanksgiving in the mission field. It reminded me of what it was like in our mission. Korea has its own Thanksgiving, Chuseok, which we gladly celebrated (usually around September or October), so when the American Thanksgiving rolled around, it was up to the individual districts or zones to figure out what they would do. For us, we were close to an Army base, so a member there was kind enough to let us on as his guests and we were able to enjoy a nice turkey dinner and play a little football, just like home...although the Army cafeteria stuffing wasn't quite up to Grandma's, it was close enough!

Cooking from scratch

Stuffing (or dressing) seems to be one of the most controversial dishes at Thanksgiving dinner. Dry? Moist? Cornbread? Giblets? Fruit?

At our family gathering, we usually have two or three stuffing variations in order to accommodate a variety of tastes. Unsurprisingly, there never seems to be any left over, either!

Monday Sketchbook: Turkey thanks

So after a nice Family Night lesson on gratitude, we had a discussion around dessert about what sort of things a turkey might be thankful for. These are a few things that we came up with...

Men In Black

I liked the idea of a kid wearing a Pilgrim hat backwards. I thought about giving him saggy breeches, too, but that would have been too much!

I pick you!

I remember a Peanuts cartoon from years ago in which someone was plucking the petals off a flower and saying, "He loves me, he loves me not..." Linus watched for a while, and then said, "It's difficult for me to believe that a flower could have the gift of prophecy!" I wonder if the same holds true for turkey tails?

Sing a song of Thanksgiving

Yeah, I think I'd be singin' the blues if I tasted good with giblets and gravy, too!

Monday Sketchbook: In the service

We have a missionary from our ward serving in one of the New York missions. He was just transferred into the City where one of their main assignments is to assist with the clean up from Sandy.

November 11

Today is the traditional commemoration of Veteran's Day/Remembrance Day/Armistice Day. Not only is it to remember the end of World War I, it's also a day to honor those who have served in the military. For me, that covers a whole slew of family and friends.

The poem "In Flanders Fields" was written by Lt. Col John McCrae (a Canadian!) and is traditionally associated with Remembrance Day.

Happy Veteran's Day! Wear a poppy, thank a veteran.

I heard the news today, oh boy

This is sort of a rerun from four years ago, but it's so appropriate for the day. I have friends and family from both sides of the aisle who will be very disappointed whatever the outcome of the election may be.

But, doggone it, I'm gonna miss those campaign ads!

On a technical note, this has been colorized from an old scan, so the artwork is a little lacking in quality. I tried to update the look of the TV a little bit, too -- but how many of us these days actually push a button on the TV to turn it off?

Monday Sketchbook: Who's who

At first I was expecting to have some sort of Star Wars/Disney sketch on here, but there have already been so many! I decided to go with this one instead. It stayed in the sketchbook because it's maybe not entirely accurate about the geologists. And we're all about accuracy here!
