Welcome waggin'

Before my mission, one of the best pieces of advice I got was to take pictures of the stuff you think is odd when you first get into your area. Before too long, all that weird stuff gets to seem natural — like the weird critters in the apartment.

Pulled out another one!

I've always thought it would be scary to have the Scouts work on the Dentistry merit badge. If you weren't afraid of dentists before...!

Oh, fetch! But in a good way.

Our dog likes to fetch golf balls after they're hit. He sometimes tries to take them off the tee.

Monday Sketchbook: Animal talent

For some reason, Bro. Brown here reminds me of one of the local farmers in Napoleon Dynamite.

Today's lesson is...

It's kind of like counting your blessings. But not!

And if you guessed that our Sunday School lesson today is from Matt. 18, you are absolutely correct!

There's always that one guy

The elders serving in our area are really good about staying focused on the work. That's not always the case!

Eternal financing

I thought I should borrow this from Sunday's Good Heavens for this, Tax Day Eve.

Monday Sketchbook: So this almost happened...

Haven't we all done this? We're not really paying attention during ward business or the sustaining of officers during stake conference, and our hand goes up automatically — an unconscious reflex in a sustaining stupor of thought.

I thought it might be kind of fun for Kerry Jo, as a gung-ho returned missionary, to accidentally do the same thing while watching General Conference. I drew this up on Friday, and thought I'd run it on Sis. Kerry Jo's Mission Blog on Saturday, the day they usually do the Sustaining of Church Officers in General Conference. But for some reason, I didn't get around to coloring it in time so it didn't get posted.

Then the Saturday Afternoon Session of General Conference happened. I decided that I didn't want Kerry Jo associated with that kind of controversy!

I know that there's a reason we ask for opposed votes during the sustainings. There are some folks who have legitimate concerns that need to be brought forward — it even happened in one of my wards one time (and it proved to be a good thing that it did!). But it was handled in a thoughtful and appropriate way. It wasn't a stunt.

I liked what one Twitter user said about the dissenting votes in conference: "It made the act of sustaining our leaders that much more meaningful to me."

So, yeah. This isn't the usual Monday Sketchbook. But I do like the gag, it's just that the timing was wrong!

Another foot or two? Already?

Today's cartoon is based on idea from faithful reader Alice, who submitted it as part of the caption contest from a few weeks ago.

I think most parents have experienced the overnight growth phenomenon. It can be kind of scary!

Opening Day

OK, I know that technically Opening Day was Monday, but we were busy with Conference things. Let's just call it a rain delay.

Monday Sketchbook: The Sunday Sessions

Here are my notes from the Sunday sessions of General Conference. If you'd like, they're available for download through Dropbox.

And don't forget to download the Conference wrap-up packet from Mormon Cartoonist Arie Van De Graaff. Together with my notes they make a perfect combination for an fun, free and informative (not to mention easy) Family Home Evening lesson! Review my notes, then pass out the activity packet!

As always, remember you can download the sessions from lds.org and listen to them at your convenience!

Welcome, welcome Saturday morning

As a warm up for the rest of this weekend, here are my notes from the General Women's Session. Watch for more to come!

Throw your hand up in the air (all those in favor)

The main sessions of General Conference start tomorrow. There are many ways to watch, listen and participate both online and using traditional media. There's even a webpage on the Church site that gives you tips on how to prepare (but it's not nearly as crafty as what you'll find on Pinterest!). And in case you missed it, the General Women's Session is already archived.

On a related note, lds.net is running a story on "The General Conference Comics Mashup," featuring some of my cartoons as well as some from Mormon Cartoonist Arie Van De Graaff, Jon Clark and (relative) newcomer Scott Hales. Check it out!

Show your colors

It seems like mission presidents have a knack of showing up at just the right time!
