Tolkien Reading Day with a COVID-19 twist

We at the Oregon DOT traditionally run some public service messages on our social media accounts for Tolkien Reading Day.  Usually the messages are about work zone safety or traffic laws. This year, in conjunction with the Governor's Office and the Oregon Department of Health, we're incorporating some of the COVID-19 safety messages.

These are draft of what we have scheduled — the messages may be modified a bit or preempted. Join us in celebrating Tolkien Reading Day: read The Hobbit while you're sequestered at home!

  1. Fellowship of the Ring came out a couple of months after the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. I remember at the time how timely the exchange between Frodo and Gandalf seemed.

Frodo: "I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened."

Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."

    It sure seems timely again.
