Be ye fishers of men

I was just going to leave it with their asking for referrals from the Young Women until I picked up on some conversations going on outside the Relief Society door (our ward has an interesting demographic). I think that tiny addition makes this gag just a little bit funnier.

It would be interesting to see what names the Elders Quorum would come up with. I think that would depend on whether it was church basketball season!

Spamming the globe!

Prince Ben also studies some of the finer mystical arts, such as communicating via a crystal ball, the medieval equivalent of the Internet.

Can you tell my apprentice is a big fan of King Arthur and Harry Potter?

Know your audience

I like the subtlety of this one. If it was the princess who was fishing, the bait would have been chocolate!

Cleaning up

It's nice to be like the Emperor in Star Wars and have an apprentice. When he was younger, my apprentice helped me come up with a couple of characters: Prince Ben and his pet dragon, Sparky. Prince Ben is in training, as many princes are, to become king.

We don't have to work until Monday

It's fun to look around the room in Primary on Sunday morning as we sing this song to see just how many kids -- and adults -- look like they didn't really spend all day Saturday getting ready for Sunday.

More Valentines' fallout

It's important in a relationship to have your eyes lined up.

This is vaguely reminiscent of another tale of love gone wrong, Claire and her broken heart, heart, heart.

More problems at the games...

This is another one written by my young apprentice. Sunflower may not exactly be a Winter Olypmiad event, but I didn't want to wait another two years to run it!

Percy Jackson, part 2

...and the rest of the shirt designs for the Camp Half-Blood cabins. Yes, there are two Hades -- we took a little literary and artistic license, but the needs of the party demanded it.

Percy Jackson, part 1

For his birthday, one of my sons had a Percy Jackson party, and we made cabin T-shirts for all the attendees. So in honor of the new movie, here are the designs for the shirts, part one.

Monday sketchbook: Here to serve

Can you really imagine Darth Maul playing a game that had "love/love" as the beginning score?

That's the way it crumbles...

My question is why in the world would she make cookies for him if she's dumping him?

Anyway, I hope your Valentine's Day is better than his!

Let the games begin!

Today marks the beginning of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Enjoy!

Happy birthday, Mr. Edison!

Red faced update: Um, make that happy early birthday, Mr. Bell.

See, I had this cartoon scheduled on my calendar in two places. One, today, and another on March 3, the birthday of Mr. Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. For some reason, I chose to run this today, on the birthday of the inventor of the electric light. Oops! It does make more sense in that context (what does an amoeba have to do with the light bulb anyway?).

It's still one of my favorite cartoons.

I think this is one of my favorite cartoons ever.

What's the opposite of a service project?

Fortunately for all of us, the phrase "she (or he) will probably die" never seems to come true. But as I type this, I begin to wonder if Tina ever made another appearance in the strip? Hmmm.

Lost days

OK, so this dates me a little bit. I remember as a kid that February was (almost) the best month ever*. First, there was Groundhog Day. Then Lincoln's Birthday. Then Valentine's Day. Then Washington's Birthday. There was a holiday every week! When they changed things, I was like Kerri Jo: I stared at my calendar trying to figure out where all of my holidays had gone!

*Except for June, July, August and December. I guess that makes it the fifth best month ever!

When upon life's pillows

When I look at this, I think two things:
  • How many of my blessings get served up on a silver platter?
  • What in the world is under that lid?

They're baaack!

Here's a quick editorial cartoon I did last year. We survived the snow, the landslides and the floods...the jury's still out on the legislature!

Reminds me of the 2nd Ward...

I always thought it would be the perfect juxtaposition to see something in the church bulletin that said "Basketball begins Friday night" followed by "Scouts meeting for first aid training Saturday morning."

Getting ready for spring

Whenever I hear of products that promise to "melt the fat away" I always envision a bunch of slimy goo puddling up in the bottom of the shower then slowly swirling down the drain. It's not a pretty picture.

What is it Aragorn says in Return of the King? "Today is not that day!"

Rodent goes on the dole

Sometimes the gags just write themselves. With the economy the way it is, I was wondering what unemployment might look like to the groundhog, who only has to work one day a year. What would he have to do to get fired?

Then I opened up the paper and saw the story from the AP wires: PETA wants to replace Punxsawtawney Phil with a robot. Of course, PETA is just trying to get a little extra ink and stir things up a bit, but that's kind of what they do, isn't it?

This cartoon fell into place right after I read that. This is one of the tamer versions I had, however. I thought about an out-of-control cyborg from a Japanese monster movie or something like the Groundhognator: "I'll be back -- in six weeks." Maybe I'll save those ideas for next year...

Anyway, make this is your best Groundhog Day EVER!
