Sketchbook: Living lemonade?

When we were at the Oregon coast this weekend, we ran into some missionaries. They had set up a lemonade stand in the parking lot for one of Oregon’s most popular beaches. They also had several copies of the Book of Mormon to share. They didn’t use this exact line, but they did get to talk with a lot of people!

Par for the course

Another from the Disney collection. Has this ever happened to you?

Approach with caution

The original sketch for this had the dog asking a deep doctrinal question. My editor, Sis. B., suggested something a little more gentle. I think this worked out a lot better!

Lengthen your stride, raise the bar, and...

I had a couple of companions who played baseball in college. This was actually something we talked about.

The riches of eternity

The scripture is D&C 67:2. It's been a favorite of mine ever since I was a missionary. It's one that touched the heart of one of our investigators and directly led to her baptism. It's one of my go-to scriptures in my spiritual first aid kit.

I also spend a lot of time worrying about what's for dinner.

Not the Sketchbook: Days of '46

How did a state holiday manage to score one of the largest civilian parades in the world?

I have a friend who was vacationing with her family in Utah one July. They pulled off onto the 600 South exit in Salt Lake City — and found themselves smack in the middle of the Days of '47 Parade melee. Who knew that July 24 was anything?

Have a safe and happy Pioneer Day wherever you are!

Food for thought

I really like this one — but halfway through drawing it, I wondered if it should have been the crickets talking?

Back on the road again

It had to be tough for the pioneers. There was no AAA, so what did they do if their wagons broke down and needed repairs?

Our menu options have changed

Someone suggested that I add a tiny editorial cricket in the corner that said something like, "Eat until you puke!" As you can see, I discarded that idea. Some people are still eating breakfast.

Happy trails to you

As I was drawing this, I couldn't decide whether this took place on the Oregon Trail or the Mormon Trail. There's a distinct lack of dysentery, so I lean toward the latter.

Sketchbook: Today's Special

Full disclaimer: I have to give partial credit for this idea to (I think) John Bytheway. I was listening to the Follow Him podcast while sketching some doodles about Peter and his vision. Bro. Bytheway said something about "pigs in a blanket" and this was the result.

Friday tie day

This cartoon comes with a disclaimer: There are actually very few mission presidents who encourage casual Fridays.

Talking the walk

One of the things we LDS cartoonists often say is that we look forward to July. It's a time we celebrate our collective pioneer heritage by making jokes about the hardships our forebears went through.

We hope they're forgiving!

Dressing for the position

Truth be told, there are very few boys in Primary who are concerned about their wardrobes.

Back in your arms

We had a dog — a Great Pyrenees — who was just a little bitty puppy when my son left on his mission. When he got back, she weighed about 125 pounds. But she remembered that he used to carry her around in his arms. She kept trying to get him to carry her like she used to. Nearly killed them both!

Sketchbook: Accommodations

I suppose there could be some correlation between entering the waters of baptism and walking the plank. Both involve being immersed in water and a change in lifestyle. But baptism is a choice. Walking the plank, generally speaking, is not.

And that's why this stayed in the sketchbook!

Life comes at you pretty fast

Can you imagine? Among the hardships th pioneers had to endure: mobs, cold, heat, hunger and thirst. And Tiwi.

If you don't know, Tiwi is a moderating system installed in most mission vehicles. The idea is to make driving safer and reduce liability. If your local missionaries have a car, ask about Tiwi. I can guarantee they'll have an opinion!

Adventure is out there

I think Nephi would’ve looked great in a fedora!

As much as I am happy with this cartoon, the ultimate Book of Mormon/Indiana Jones crossover has to go to the Ward Cartoonist for this one

Or maybe they’re both part of a new franchise. Next: The Jaredite Records.

Prepare to become

This is a drawing I made for our stake’s Young Men’s Camp. A focus is preparing the YM to grow from being stripling warriors to become men like Captain Moroni: “…if all men had been and were…like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever.”

Sketchbook: Be canine ready

Most dogs are not fans of fireworks. All too often they spend Independence Day in misery and anxiety because of the loud noises of fireworks and other celebrations.

My thought is that next to every pop up tent that sells fireworks, there should also be a canine comfort tent where you can get stuff that will help your dog cope.

Of course my dog has to be different. She likes fireworks and tries to chase them down! She came close one time to fetching a ground flower!

Either way, take care of your pets. Keep them safe and they'll take care of you!

This has been a public service announcement from friends of puppers and this station. Thank you.
