Finding the right incentive

I don't know why, but the kid doing the shoveling reminds me of Peter Fox from Fox Trot.

Back to the ol' millstone!

We just started a new semester here. Some of the kids are struggling!

Coming on line

Actually, there are some places where this might be a good idea!

Three stages

I could add an additional box on the left side for deacons and show them running away...

Warmest wishes

We're in the part of the country that's having the warm temperatures. It's really rough!

Monday Sketchbook: Inside the box

I kind of liked this idea, but it seemed a little cynical to me. Besides, our Sunday school class likes to get outside the box as often as possible. Way outside the box!

He's got the title

Personally, I think he's more like Batman.

For your further edification, Arie VanDeGraaff is the master of Mormon-themed superheroes...

I like it toasty warm

I'm sure any mission president can tell you stories of smart missionaries doing stupid things. I know I did!

Happy are we, happy are we!

Someone explained their time in Primary by quoting Charles Dickens: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."

Personally, I think Primary is awesome — games, snacks, songs, treats. You don't get that in Gospel Doctrine!

Cloud control

Good things and bad things are only a click or two away. It might help to have a reminder which click to choose!

Monday Sketchbook: All in on service

This year's Mutual Theme is from Doctrine and Covenants 4:2, "O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day."

There are lots of ways to do that...even for the youngest deacons!

Mix it up

It seems that some of the sister missionaries have almost as many scarves as the elders have ties!

In the air tonight

I drove the carpool to the stake dance last week. Let's just say that I had to drive with the windows down all the way home!

Je Suis Charlie

The incident with the attack on the offices of Charlie Habdo, although it was a half a world away, hit a little close to home for me.

First off, it happened in Paris. Every two years we take a group of kids there; it's not just some far off place — I've walked the streets of that city. Secondly, I work with newspapers and reporters all the time, including working a stint in the newsroom myself. And, finally, I can't wrap my head around cartoonists being killed for something they drew. I've had a few critics, and some cartoons that have generated complaints (such as this one), but nothing even approaching that magnitude.

As so many have said, we stand by the people of France. We stand for a free press and freedom of expression.

Je suis Charlie.

Evolution of an illustration

I had to illustrate an article about computer security. Here's my first attempt.

There were some people who thought this was a little too political, so I did a second, safer version.

Monday Sketchbook: It's the end!

It's my least favorite part of winter — the day the lights go down. Personally, I like what Kerry Jo said a long time ago: we should keep them lit until Groundhog Day. It would make January a lot less blah!

One I can keep!

It's a good idea to make at least one resolution that's easy to keep!

Boring technical note: In case you're wondering, I'm trying out a new pen I got for Christmas. I like it so far!

2014 in Review: The Top Ten, Part 2

And now, for the rest of the 2014 Top Ten!

5. Mail time can get a little emotional.

4. Sometimes even the bishop has a hard day.

3. Life is full of surprises!

2. There's a preponderance of General Conference-related crafts and cute things on sites like Pinterest. There's nothing wrong with that — as long as folks remember the part about watching conference!

1. And here's the top cartoon for this year... it's all about the missionaries!
