Join the rebellion

Yes, the news story about Utah banning the scriptures made big headlines. But what I think is funny is that even if the lawmakers and policymakers ban the books from the school libraries, a huge percentage of the kids will have Gospel Library or another scripture app on their smartphones anyway, making it one of the least effective book bans in the history of banned books.

Editor's note: This seems an awful lot like an editorial cartoon. What do you think?
 

Sketchbook: Low standards

I usually don't wax political, but after I heard about the bombings in Pakistan I just couldn't get it off my mind. It's one thing to make a political statement, but it's something completely different to target innocents on a playground. I'm convinced there's a not-so-special place in the underworld prepared for people who commit such heinous offenses.

Thank goodness general conference is coming up — I think a lot of us could use a mega-dose of good news right about now!

They're baaack!

Here's a quick editorial cartoon I did last year. We survived the snow, the landslides and the floods...the jury's still out on the legislature!

Shoot!

I guess this might be classified as more of an editorial cartoon. There was a clinic at the high school a couple of days ago. There were a lot of people who showed up to get the vaccination. There were also a lot of people who swore they wouldn't get the vaccination because of all kinds of irrational fears about it. But like my buddy Kristin says, "Just get the shot already!"

Get it? Got it. Good!

A few years ago (several, really), the City of Provo ran a promotional campaign, "Provo's Got It, Get It!" That same summer they had a bunch of flooding and mudslides. In fact, we had a branch of the river running down the road in front of our house on 9th East. The natural disasters and the promotional tag line just seemed to fit together so well!

The water's fine

Yesterday was the last day for students at high school; today is the last day for teachers. It's amazing how much traffic drops off as soon as school is out.

I drew this cartoon for the newspaper during spring semester finals at BYU. My brother was notorious for hanging out at the pool whenever he wasn't in class, and I could just imagine something like this happening to him.

High road to Provo

This is one of my Daily Universe editorial cartoons. When I was going to school, I thought it was pretty stupid that the city would have one of the main north/south roads to campus torn up (900 East) during the summer. Little did I know that a few years later, I'd be telling folks what a great idea it was to have the other main north/south road to campus torn up all summer (and into the fall!) with University Avenue (see the Explore Provo cartoons).

I was a little surprised that they didn't typeset the caption, "Third guy today looking for a road to take him back to 900 East."

I also thought it was pretty cool that I could show off my mad han-ja skills, using the Chinese characters for China. I was impressed!

I get asked from time to time whether I ever do editorial cartoons. I've done a few, but not many. Here's one I did a few years ago. Change the location, and it may still be pertinent today!
