It’s the Eve!

Yes, it’s a rerun — but it is Canada Day Eve! Celebrate wisely. I know we’ll have fireworks going off in our neighborhood tonight!

They call them spiritual eyes.

Burnt offerings?

The reference is, of course Doctrine and Covenants 9:8: "...and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you..."

You can also get points if you went to Isaiah 50:11: "Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire..."

Sketchbook: Team mom

It would have been nice as a missionary at the end of the day to be given a juice box, a granola bar and get told, “Good job!” no matter how lousy the day was.

A particular people

Whenever we have the missionaries over for dinner, we check to see if they have any food allergies or concerns. We've never yet had anyone say that their food has to be "just right."

Same same

I'm sure that's something most guys can relate to — those days when your tie just won't tie right. Last Sunday I tried three times to get my tie to be the right length. Then I gave up and decided to wear a sweater so it wouldn't matter.

Mind your speech!

We’ve been out less than a week and already we’ve heard those fateful words!

Sketchbook: Troubleshooting

Imagine working the support desk for the Liana: "Is it plugged in? Have you done the proper repenting? Hmm. It should be working..."

Happy Father's Day!

This is one of my favorite Father's Day cartoons. It really is a direct quote from my dad.

Happy Father's Day to all!

After all

Here's another from the Disney collection. This was a trip to draw and color!

In to the water

Sometimes a gag just seems so obvious it's a wonder that I haven't seen it before! My question is, will she need to find a white fin?

Join the rebellion

Yes, the news story about Utah banning the scriptures made big headlines. But what I think is funny is that even if the lawmakers and policymakers ban the books from the school libraries, a huge percentage of the kids will have Gospel Library or another scripture app on their smartphones anyway, making it one of the least effective book bans in the history of banned books.

Editor's note: This seems an awful lot like an editorial cartoon. What do you think?

Sketchbook: Next to cleanliness

Our mission only had two vehicles: the president’s car and the mission van. We didn’t find too many surprises.

Repairs while you wait

Have you ever walked into a store or a business that you weren't sure about, and then you see something that tells you you're in the right place?

Holly, with a phoenix feather core

There were suits I had that were perfect for missionary work — I wore out my gray, three-piece. There were others that came out in open rebellion, splitting at the seams at unfortunate times for no apparent good reason. I'm looking at you, brown Mr. Mac special!

Was it the same for you?

Something to chew on

This was among the first gags I sold to the Church magazines back when it was The New Era and I was still in high school. They had another cartoonist do the artwork (Cal Grondahl), so I was a little disappointed at the time.  My skills as an artist have improved over the ensuing years. I can't say I blame them.

As a result, this little gem has been hidden away. Yes, it would have been better to revisit it last year while we studied the Old Testament.

My hope is that many of these old prophets have a sense of humor — or at the very least they're forgiving!

Taking a page from the pros

I won a citizenship essay contest when I was in first grade. The closing line was, "We do not steal sheep."

Sketchbook: Danger, danger!

A typo got me thinking about how we approach two types of hazards. I am intrigued by the idea, but it seems a little heavy for a regular gag. What do you think?

Level of discourse

Have you noticed that discussions don't seem to go off the rails nearly as much as they did in the days before Come, Follow Me

My opinion is that using Come, Follow Me has elevated the level of discussion. We're getting a lot more meat and meaning with our lessons — which means nobody has to bring up stuff like ancient American astronauts or Adam's belly button to make the conversation interesting!
