Sketchbook: Memorial Day

Thank you to all who served; thank you to those who gave their all.

Hope your Memorial Day is safe and happy.

Walking a mile in their shoes

It's not only true for history, it's true for family history as well. You can really understand your ancestors better once you see where they lived and walk in their footsteps.

Have a memorable Memorial Day.

Ever get frustrated trying to track down a family line? There are ways to get around that...

Those fuzzy siblings

My dad's family had a horse named Tony the Pony. Tony was a legend amongst the siblings; each claimed that Tony belonged to him. But there's nowhere to put pets on the fan chart!

That's why I'm glad they've added the Memories to Family Search. Not only can you add photos, but you can add histories, memories and stories about your ancestors — and their pets!

Companion inventory

We just had transfers, and we went down to one set of missionaries instead of two. I guess that means the new set will be super powerful to make up it!

It will surprise you

I remember when I was a deacon we thought it was hilarious to change the words to the hymns. Not in a Weird Al parody kind of way... just changing a word or two.

It doesn't take much to get a deacon to giggle.

How to get those stubborn stains

I refuse to say whether I've heard true accounts of missionaries dragging fire hoses into their apartments.

There's a statute of limitation on that kind of thing, isn't there?

Pulled to serve

I couldn't decide whether it should be pulling the sword from the stone that would determine a mission call, or a visit from the Lady of the Lake. But then I remembered the wisdom of Monty Python — that watery tarts handing out swords isn't a good basis for doing things.

Sword in the stone it is!

Minute by minute

There are some days where it seems that hourly isn't nearly enough!

Sketchbook: Announcements at the OK Corral Ward

Our congregation has been meeting with the full ward for the full two-hour block for three weeks now. It’s nice to see everyone, but we still have the mask and physical distancing requirements. It’s sometimes difficult to hear the speakers or comments in classes. In priesthood meeting, the chairs were all set up on the three-point line.

According to government guidelines, once we reach a critical mass of 70% vaccinations, we can ease up on the restrictions. Like this bishop, I’d love to see everyone in our ward get shot.

So many questions

I keep thinking I should make a collection of cartoons that have been rendered obsolete due to recent adjustments to programs. Of course, I never really understood what a Mia Maid was, anyway...!

This is the last of the reruns — this time around, anyway. I'll be back to posting new material on Monday!

Training day

I can tell you with complete confidence that I am glad that none of my door approaches as a missionary were recorded for posterity.

I hear thy cry

It was so nice to hear kids crying at church last week. It's been a long time!

Sketchbook: Message from mom

There are upsides and downsides for missionaries being able to talk to their families each week!

The gifts that keep on giving

From what I've heard, it's not just our house that looks like this on Mother's Day.

Meanwhile at the Lion House

One of the downsides of plural marriage, I would suppose. But it probably helped keep the florists in business!

Remember last year?

That's what Mother's Day was like a year ago. Remember?

I'm taking a bit of a break, so I'll be running a batch of reruns for the next little while. Enjoy!

Yes, it's May the Fourth

Once again we get to do a Star Wars parody about work zone safety for Star Wars Day! Remember, let's be safe out there!

Sketchbook: Going back

I substituted for Sunday school last week. It was my first time teaching in-person for well over a year. I was shocked at how my teaching paradigm had shifted! I kept thinking I should share my screen or put something clever in the chat! And with everyone wearing masks, it was almost as if their microphones were turned off.

Frozen contacts

I can totally see Anna being ready to get baptized after the first discussion. I can also see Elsa being an eternal investigator.
