Sharing the bounty

The bishop also gets ten percent of all the coal.

Programming for the arts

I haven't taken an official survey or anything, but I would imagine that the majority of Latter-day Saint artists got their start coloring the programs at church.

Gone, but not forgotten

I guess sending Christmas cards is kind of an anachronism. But still, you don't have to email or DM any of those newly-discovered relatives either!

Ready to light it up?

This year's Light the World campaign looks like an exciting one, and a great way to serve as Jesus did: with simple acts of service and love.

This year, each week will have an area of focus on whom to serve: Light the World, Light the Community, Light Your Family, Light Your Faith.

Each focus area has a video to inspire you. And if you want, there's a downloadable calendar to help light your imagination on how to serve.

It all starts with a day of service on Dec. 1, and culminates with a special Christmas service at church on Dec. 23. But it doesn't have to stop there. Keep the light going.

Join me and thousands of others as we light the world with His love.

Sketchbook: It's the countdown!

There are a couple of families in our ward with children who are serving who greeted each other yesterday not with "hello," but rather the number of days until they get the Christmas call from their missionaries. In case you're wondering, today it's 29.

Wake up and do something more

Of course, nowadays the early morning sales start Thursday evening. But that won't stop our enterprising elders!

Come, ye hungry elders, come!

This happened to us, except it was Christmas Eve rather than Thanksgiving.

Have a happy Thanksgiving, and count your blessings!

The Wide World of Turkey Sports

What's Thanksgiving without a turkey bowl? It's one of those things that make the holiday what it is.

We weren't allowed to play football in our mission, so we played baseball instead. Fewer injuries, but just as many heated discussions!

Some turkey you probably never heard of

I tried to show him wearing skinny jeans, too. That's why you can't see his tail feathers.

Sketchbook: Warning! Warning!

No offense to the other turkey companies: Norbest, Jenni-O, Foster Farms. He could turn into one of those, too!

Aspire higher

"For once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will long to return."

 - Leonardo da Vinci

You could pretty much say the same thing about a nice, moist roasted turkey!

Raising the rafters*

After I drew this, I noticed that this guy was the only one in the yard. The thought kind of gave me the willies!

*A group of turkeys is called a "rafter," not a gobble or a flock as is sometimes thought. See? This site has educational value. Maybe this will come up when you have your run on Jeopardy!

That's gonna take a foot or two

Book of remembrance, ties of remembrance. It's a thing.

I've heard that there are some missionaries who collect signatures of their companions on the back of a tie, thus making it a tie of remembrance!

And do something more

Sometimes it takes a spiritual jolt to get things going in the morning.

Sketchbook: Shine on!

Is your Sunday school class in Isaiah too? A lot of people think it's challenging to study Isaiah, how his writings can be understood on multiple levels across multiple dispensations.

It's even more challenging when you're a cartoonist, not only trying to understand what he's saying, but fighting that niggling part of your brain that says, "Yeah, but how can I make a joke out of this?"

In the leafy treetop

Remember that old short story by O. Henry, The Last Leaf? I started to think about that as I colorized this cartoon. I had to change the caption so it wouldn't make me cry!

The best parts

I had a friend who rhapsodized about the smells of September: freshly-sharpened pencils, new textbooks and the fresh-cut grass of a football field. I kinda like the smell of November.

That feeling of emptiness

We had so many trick or treaters last night, we even had to give out our good candy. Rats!
