Sketchbook: Memorial Day

When I was a kid, my dad would take me around the cemetery on Memorial Day and tell me all the stories of our ancestors who were buried there. Some of the stories were quite exciting, some seemed mundane. But I thought it was pretty cool how everyone had a story.

After my dad passed on, my uncle took on the task of sharing the stories from family history, and now he's gone, too. It makes me wish that I had paid more attention or recorded the stories somehow.

Thank you to all who served; thank you to those who gave their all.

Hope your Memorial Day is safe and happy.

Walking a mile in their shoes

It's not only true for history, it's true for family history as well. You can really understand your ancestors better once you see where they lived and walk in their footsteps.

Have a memorable Memorial Day.

Sketchbook: Memorial Day

Whenever I think of Memorial Day, I remember walking through the cemetery in Spanish Fork with my dad. We'd stop at headstone after headstone, and he'd tell the story about the person who was buried there. I was amazed at his knowledge and memory. To him, they weren't just markers and memorials — they were people with stories, who lived real lives. He made them come alive.

I wished that I had paid better attention. He's there amongst them now, and I hope that his story won't be forgotten.

Remember your ancestors this Memorial Day. After all, they worked together to bring forth you!

As I get older, I realize how much more there is to remember. I should have paid more attention when I was younger!

Sketchbook: It works both ways

Memorial Day is a great time to swap stories about your ancestors — and record them for future generations.

Memorial Day

I thought I'd try something a little different with this Memorial Day cartoon. I wondered how the same thing would look in different strips. Here we have the Kerry Jo/121 version, we have something similar over at Good Heavens, and a variation at Zarahemla Times (although there's no record of official Nephite holidays). Whaddyathink?

Happy Memorial Day! If you're not able to visit the graves of your ancestors, visit them at FamilySearch.org and share some stories or photographs there!
