A covert from the storm

I was a missionary in Korea when they played in the finals of the Asian Cup. As missionaries, we had no idea what was going on. We just thought it was super weird how no one was on the streets and no one would answer their doors. Sadly, they finished second. But the game had a grip on the nation.

Likewise, we were staying in a hotel in France a few years ago when there was another big European match. Our room was the floor just above the bar. It was an exciting game, apparently — and a sleepless night!

It's fun to be co-hosts to the World Cup this year. The love of the game is such a breath of fresh air from everything else that's been in the news lately!

*As missionaries, we did have to shelter in place one time for nearly a week. It was because of protest riots, though, not celebrations. Good times!
 

Sketchbook: Choose the Right

There’s a lot of hand wringing about BYU and the football playoffs. While I certainly think they deserve more respect than they’re getting, let’s see how the game goes this Saturday. 
 

The bigger scoreboard

There comes a point for most missionaries when they realize the things they thought were so important aren't really that important. That paradigm shift can be a little unsettling. 
 

Offsides

We live close to the high school, so it's sometime difficult to concentrate when we have the missionaries over on Friday nights when there's a home game. If the windows are open, it sounds like the marching band is in our front yard.

It's important to have the proper gear

All you moms out there, don't worry — missionaries NEVER go anyplace that would be considered...questionable.

That said, who's looking forward to the upcoming collegiate football season? It could be a good one!

It was always a lesson in humility to play soccer/football against kids who played the game all their lives.

Sketchbook: Super Groundhog Day

Yesterday was quite an eventful day, with it being Groundhog Day AND the Super Bowl (even better if you're a Chiefs fan!). I imagined what it would be like to combine the two events. 

Players gotta play

The only reason I knew who was playing in the Super Bowl while I was on my mission was because one of the zones had an activity that included watching the game. It was on a Monday — our preparation day — so it's not quite as bad as it sounds. And it only happened once.

Take me out

If you're in town, come down to the concession stand and buy a hot dog or two. We're working concessions this week to raise funds for academics.

And always abounding in good works

My son the lineman struggled. He loved to hit and block his opponents, but he always apologized after knocking them to the ground. 

The Wide World of Turkey Sports

What's Thanksgiving without a turkey bowl? It's one of those things that make the holiday what it is.

We weren't allowed to play football in our mission, so we played baseball instead. Fewer injuries, but just as many heated discussions!

Doubt your doubts

Blessed are they that mourn

We all carry some sort of burden — death, illness, disappointment. The holiday season often makes it worse. Do something nice for someone today. We could all use a little more kindness.

Sketchbook: Second hour sorrows

There has been a marked decrease in the number of people discussing college football after sacrament meeting over the past few weeks. On the plus side, the Gospel Doctrine ranks have grown!

A wing and a prayer

We had a few technical difficulties this week. We got a new scanner, and it isn't functioning quite the way we had hoped. Consequently, this cartoon is a little bit late. It still holds true, though.

My two cents: if you can't support the team, at least support the players.
