Sketchbook: The good ol' days

Remember when all the countries were getting along? And we celebrated each other? Yeah, those were good times.

The good news is, college football starts this weekend.

Sketchbook: Free kick

There's got to be some way to keep track of who's nice to the missionaries!

Sketchbook: Telemundo

We've been watching the World Cup games on Telemundo. For one thing, there are way fewer commercials. The announcers are way more enthusiastic. And I'm pretty sure I'm learning vocabulary they'd never teach on Duolingo!

A covert from the storm

I was a missionary in Korea when they played in the finals of the Asian Cup. As missionaries, we had no idea what was going on. We just thought it was super weird how no one was on the streets and no one would answer their doors. Sadly, they finished second. But the game had a grip on the nation.

Likewise, we were staying in a hotel in France a few years ago when there was another big European match. Our room was the floor just above the bar. It was an exciting game, apparently — and a sleepless night!

It's fun to be co-hosts to the World Cup this year. The love of the game is such a breath of fresh air from everything else that's been in the news lately!

*As missionaries, we did have to shelter in place one time for nearly a week. It was because of protest riots, though, not celebrations. Good times!

Illegal use of hands

There are a lot of jokes that could stem from this one: "They look dead out there" or "Our team seems lifeless" or worse. The same could be said, however, of last week's BYU game. Let's just let that go.

He shoots...

It was always a lesson in humility to play soccer/football against kids who played the game all their lives.

Sketchbook: The Plan of Redemption

I know the people in Croatia are proud of their team for making it to the finals of the World Cup. It's an amazing achievement! Heck, the USA didn't even qualify.

I think this would be the perfect opportunity for the missionaries to teach about the Plan of Redemption, don't you? After all, the next one in four years is just around the corner!

Hearing voices

I think it would be wrong for me to say that this is based on a real life experience.

Monday sketchbook: G-o-o-a-a-- no, not really

Can anyone offer a reasonable explanation as to why the U.S. team's goal was called back? And what's up with France? This sketch seems less crazy after seeing what's happening in real life!

Long time passing

Here's a cartoon that's almost based on real life. I remember walking down the streets of Yeosu one night as a missionary and wondering where all the people had gone. The streets were nearly deserted; many stores were closed. My companion and I went into one shop that was open. The proprietor welcomed us in, told us to come over by the TV and then told us what the score was. Apparently there was a major futbol/soccer game going on -- not the World Cub, but some prestigious Asian tournament. Who knew? Certainly not us a missionaries!

We weren't called to watch soccer games, alas, so we went on our way. But it certainly answered the question of where all the people had gone.

Monday sketchbook: That's using your head

Once again proving that sometimes the ideas are better inside my brain than they are on paper. You should see the ones that don't make it this far!
