It's fun to see the little kids in Primary dragging their scriptures to class. I guess, like many things in the gospel, it's something you grow into.

Sketchbook: For our day

There are a LOT of podcasts about the scriptures and about the Church. Some of them are really good. Others? Well, they run the spectrum. The thing to keep in mind, in my humble opinion, is that podcasts can make a good supplement to scripture study. But nothing beats being in the scriptures yourself.

Wait until you hear about the families in the Book of Mormon! It's almost like the scriptures were written for dysfunctional families. And if you think that one family in your ward really is perfect, well — guess again!

Sometimes when you read the scriptures, a verse just pops out at you and gives you guidance or inspiration. Like this one did for me.
 

Seek ye learning

This section of the Doctrine and Covenants that we're studying right now for Come, Follow Me has sooo much good stuff — and it's good material for cartoons as well!

This one just kind of drew itself. All I had to do was think back to the time when our five boys went to four different schools — and all of them were involved in extracurricular activities!

Raise your hand if you've never felt guilty reading D&C 88:124? Yeah, I thought so.

I like this gag, but one of the main reasons I left it in the sketchbook is that the drawing feels derivative of Jeremy in Zits. I guess I could always try drawing it differently!

Final days

 

I haven’t been in school for a couple of decades now, and it doesn’t change. Deadlines for stories, reports and projects all seem to land at the same time. There may be a life lesson there somewhere, but I don’t know if I’m ready for it.

Weak goals

 

In our Come, Follow Me study recently there have been references to the “weak and simple” declaring the word to all the world. It reminds me of Elder Holland saying that imperfect people are all the Lord has to work with. He deals with it, and so should we. 

Maybe that was a typo

Perhaps one of the most underrated scriptures we have. 

Yes, that should be “souls.” I often wonder just how much trouble I’m going to get in for “wresting the scriptures” to get a joke to work. 

On a different note, to me the dad looks like a cross between the Mission President and Walt Duncan, Jeremy’s dad in Zits. Is it just me?

If the librarian can’t find it, the only thing left to do is ask his mom.

In some ways it's a lot easier to mark up the electronic scriptures in the Library app. Still, there's nothing like a good, marked-up copy of the scriptures.

Found 'em!

It's been a LONG time since I've done anything with Zarahemla Times. But as I've been pondering this first week's contents of our Come, Follow Me study, I keep thinking back to some of my old cartoons.

In 1 Nephi 5:22, it says that it's "...wisdom in the Lord that we should carry them (the scriptures) with us as we journeyed in the wilderness..." I don't know how it is in your family, but not too many years ago we were like these guys. Searching the scriptures meant trying to find them. Now we're able to carry a whole church library on our phones in our pockets. We carry them with us. 

It seems significant to me that as Nephi is writing to our day that he would include that emphasis. Maybe it is important for us to carry them with us. Always.
