Birthday greetings!

Once upon a time, my wife and I taught a Sunday school class populated with a gaggle of 15-going-on-16-year-old girls. One girl came in to class one day pouting. When we asked her what was wrong, she said almost this exact thing.

In case you are worried, the situation has since been remedied. She has now been on several dates. It took almost a week for the first one!

Read

I usually don't do this, but as this is Banned Books Week, I'm re-running this week's Good Heavens.

Now you know the rest of the story

I had a companion in the mission field who said that he belonged to the Church of the NFL before he was baptized. I imagine this is the kind of story they told in their Sunday school classes.

Reuse. Recycle.

"Green" is such an overworked word these days -- everything is described as being green, or good for the environment. New missionaries are often called greenies (in case you didn't know). They may not be part of the three Rs of recycling, but they can be good for your internal environment.

BYW, here's something for your Gee Whiz file: In French, new missionaries are called blue rather than green. Now you know.

Let me get that to go

Although summer is over, it isn't winter yet. Baseball and football are still in full swing, and the season of the hot dog is still in its prime. With everything, of course.

Out. Dated.

If you wander through the stands at almost any high school football game, you'll see that in every group of kids there's at least one with a phone to his or her ear and another two or three texting. It was just a few years ago that only a handful of kids had cell phones. You have to go back a little farther -- but not a lot -- that this cartoon expressed the norm.

Protect your investment

Apparently frugal is not a good label to carry in the world of dating. Who knew?

57 channels

With the conversion to digital TV, cable isn't the phenomenon it once was. But I do like this cartoon -- I find it to be one of those simple joys of life to find a rerun of an old show that I like.

Fall has fell

One thing that's kind of cool about where we live is that you can tell when the seasons change. This past weekend, it became fall. The change in seasons reminded me of this old 121 cartoon.
Back in college (when this strip ran in the student newspaper) I had several friends who looked for any excuse to skip classes and stay in bed. Those same people are now doctors, lawyers and teachers. Meanwhile, I draw cartoons. Is there a message here?

Monday sketchbook: Dysfunctional family history

While my grandma allegedly fudged a little on some dates, I think it would be totally unethical to do a wholesale swap of unwanted relatives, don't you?

Ahoy! Avast!

When I drew this, I was thinking that there are probably many Sunday school teachers who would like to do this, yet somehow restrain themselves. As I looked at it again, I realized that it may not be limited to Sunday school -- high school, middle school, elementary teachers. Heck, probably anyone who has taught something and given a reading assignment!

Avast!

In honor of Talk Like A Pirate Day, we offer our homage to buried treasure. Arrr!

Steady as she goes

I know a few guys who were confused by this concept. I wonder if confusion set in on the other side as well?

Good knight

We went to the Shrewsbury Renaissance Fair recently, and one of the highlights was a jousting tournament. After the tournament, they passed around the hat (helmet, actually) to offset the costs incurred by the jousters. That got me thinking about other ways they could earn money. I was tempted, but I stopped short of the NASCAR school of sponsorship.

Saturday is a special day

It's the day we get ready for college football!
My father-in-law routinely plans his chores around which games are on when, a fact that is not lost on my own offspring!

Temp job

Here's a fun fact: Actually there currently is a nationwide shortage of striping paint (it is a specialty paint, after all) that is causing headaches for some highway departments across the country.

Dust in the wind

Sometimes the construction work, especially the excavation, would kick up a lot of dust even though they sprayed it down a couple of times a day. Sometimes the best defense is to agree that there is a problem.

Across the great divide

In case you don't know, the Cougareat is the dining area of the student center at BYU. And if you don't know that, you may also not be aware that there are a lot of "fat BYU co-ed" jokes at BYU.

I apologize to any current or former BYU co-eds. The gag does not apply to you.

Monday sketchbook: Up to your neck

And so as Labor Day marks the end of summer, we take one last look at the beach.

It's amazing what you find in the tide pools!

The garage is alive

My oldest son had a band -- the Porcupines -- and they were pretty good, winning a local battle of the bands competition. They usually practiced at the drummer's house, which was OK with us. And our neighbors.

You can hear one of their songs here: an acoustic version of "Ode to Indecision"

I love it when a remake comes together

Here's another old 121 cartoon that I thought would never be relevant again. But thanks to the Hollywood trend of taking old, bad TV shows and turning them into new shiny, bad movies, it's cycled back! I thought I should hurry and post it, though, because the movie is on its last legs at the dollar theater. Hurry!

Ahh, that green-eyed monster

I have to give full credit to my dear cousin Kerri for the gag on this one. And it's true -- she does still fit in them! We're all so proud of her!

Catching fire

I'm sure our house was not the only one that was awake all night after Suzanne Collins' book Mockingjay was released!

It occurred to me as I posted this that had this been done in a different year, I could have used something like Harry Potter or Twilight. But it's only been in recent years that there have been these blockbuster novels... Unless back in Old Testament times there was a huge rush for Leviticus or Second Kings. Hmmm...
