Share and share alike

I lied. But not intentionally. There was one more New Era promo that I inadvertently skipped over.

With one accord

I think this might be the last of my New Era promotional cartoons for a while. This one features most of their regular cartoonists (from left): Me, Arie Van De Graaff, Val Bagley, Jon Clark and Ryan Stoker. I drew a character in the style of each. I just thought it was kind of fun.

Something in the way

This is another of the New Era promos that ranks among my favorites.

It doubles as an umbrella

This is probably my favorite of the New Era promos.

Which reminds me: the purpose of the cartoons is to encourage people to subscribe to the New Era. Check it out online or subscribe today!

Ain't it good to know

Yes, it's a bit of a spinoff from the old commercial from the Church with the tagline, "When families don't listen, children can go to the dogs."

Lights out!

This New Era promo is based on real life. I have one son who loves to stay up late reading in bed. But he doesn't read junk: Shakespeare, Tolkien, Orson Scott Card, Watterson, Schulz, Borgman and Scott, Van De Graaff... And, yes, the New Era.

Up, up in the sky!

Another from the New Era promo series. It's kind of a groaner, but I like it!

Let's start with a bit of a back story to set up this cartoon just a little better.

The New Era invited a bunch of its cartoonists to draw up some cartoons to use for some promotional materials for the magazine. Over the next few days, I'll be sharing a few of the ones I submitted.

Come prepared

I think they stopped using fire for firesides when they started inviting the deacons. Which makes me think, shouldn't they call it something like a "podiumside" instead?

Birthday greetings!

Once upon a time, my wife and I taught a Sunday school class populated with a gaggle of 15-going-on-16-year-old girls. One girl came in to class one day pouting. When we asked her what was wrong, she said almost this exact thing.

In case you are worried, the situation has since been remedied. She has now been on several dates. It took almost a week for the first one!

Reuse. Recycle.

"Green" is such an overworked word these days -- everything is described as being green, or good for the environment. New missionaries are often called greenies (in case you didn't know). They may not be part of the three Rs of recycling, but they can be good for your internal environment.

BYW, here's something for your Gee Whiz file: In French, new missionaries are called blue rather than green. Now you know.

Crumbs from the table

I have a feeling that there are some missionaries who tried this very thing...

Steady as she goes

I know a few guys who were confused by this concept. I wonder if confusion set in on the other side as well?

By their fruits ye shall know them

For those of you who may have been brought here through the link on the "Renew America" website, I invite you to read for yourself the Church's official statement on political neutrality, or watch the video. That and other, factual information is available through the Church's online newsroom.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled (and copyrighted) cartoon, which isn't political at all!

Monday sketchbook: Deja vu, sort of.

I'm going to let you in on one of my little secrets. I keep a little cartoon calendar on my desk, and each day I tear off the page and sketch a cartoon idea on the back. This one was on the back of June 8 of the Peanuts calendar, which was 2009. I thought the idea was a little too silly to go any further, so I stuck it in the sketchbook pile. Fast forward to June 2010, and I open up my New Era and there's a Bagley cartoon with practically the same idea! He chose a different hymn (Let Us All Press On). That's probably what made the difference. Shows what a good judge I am!

Good tithings we bring to you and your kin

This is based on a true story. We were finishing up our trick or treating rounds last year when someone in the car said, "We have to make one more stop. We need to go to the bishop's house!"

"Why?"

And thus, this cartoon was born.

Supplemental (10/26)
So I open up the Oregonian today, and there on the comics page is this Pickles strip:
I thought that was kind of weird, especially since Mr. Crane is also LDS. Interesting that we both came up with a similar idea.
