Light the World: Shining Star

Who has been a light in your life this year? Dedicate the star on your tree to that person, says the Light the World suggestion for today.

With all that's been going on in the world, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. That's why it's so important to look for the light and to be the light. Like yesterday's challenge of saying hello, often a simple gesture can make a huge difference!

On a completely different note, I'm not the only one who thought of Earth, Wind and Fire when I read this prompt, am I?
 

Light the World: Light 2021

When the lights go down

A lot of people think it's a huge job to put up the lights on Temple Square. I think that it would be a huge job to take the lights down!

And where do they store the lights in the off season? Is there a big storage area under the Tabernacle with bins full of lights? Or maybe there's a section in granite vaults where they keep them.

Maybe it's just one the mysteries of the kingdom!

Light the World: Let your light so shine

The final Light the World challenge is to continue to let your light shine. The scriptures tell us that Jesus "went about doing good." We can do the same!

Our Scout troop went caving near Mount Adams in southwest Washington. Deep inside Dead Horse Cave is a large cavern. We gathered all of our scouts and leaders in the center and turned out all of our lights.

We were surrounded by a thick darkness — so thick that none of us could see our hands in front of our faces, let alone a glimmer of light.

After one minute, our guide turned on his flashlight.

It felt blinding. The relief felt by the scouts was palpable.

Then everyone turned on his own light. The cavern seemed like it was ablaze.

In the same way, each kind act that we perform is like a small light in the cavern. And if we all share our light — one by one — what a difference we can make in the world!

I grew up near Salt Lake City, so at Christmastime when I think of Christmas lights, I think of Temple Square. That's a proper display; that's the standard. I'm still working toward achieving that.
