The heat is on

Things get a little crazy when you prep Thanksgiving dinner — yet it (usually) turns out to be just fine! 
 

Pepperoni service

My brother-in-law brought a pizza to the hospital for us just after my youngest was born. It was one of the most memorable pizzas I've ever had!
 

Made for missionaries

My thoughts inevitably turn to the Missionary Training Center each Thanksgiving. It was a special place to be at this time of the year when we (in the United States) turn our thoughts to gratitude. 

What made the day more special was knowing that while I was there eating Thanksgiving dinner in the MTC cafeteria, my family was about a mile away, enjoying a home cooked meal at my grandma's house.
 

The dinner appointment

This gives "having the missionaries for dinner" another level of meaning!
 

Lines of authority

To tell the truth, I think most bishops would prefer to get a phone call like that over some of the messages they get. Besides that, any good Relief Society president would make sure you ate your vegetables. Oh, there would still be dessert, but you’d have to down the veggies first!

A warning voice

Always check your pockets before you do laundry. A lot of vegetables can fit into a little shirt pocket!

 

The important stuff

The statute of limitations has expired, so it’s safe now to say that sometimes we’d visit members for no other reason than we knew that they would feed us. 
 

A mealtime miracle

It seems to me that, for missionaries, no matter how full they may claim to be after dinner, there's always room for more. Especially if it's dessert!
 

Service hours

I've found that missionaries are usually really good about eating their vegetables when they come to dinner. Most likely it's because they don't usually eat them when they have to cook for themselves.
 

Our menu options have changed

Someone suggested that I add a tiny editorial cricket in the corner that said something like, "Eat until you puke!" As you can see, I discarded that idea. Some people are still eating breakfast.
 

A particular people

Whenever we have the missionaries over for dinner, we check to see if they have any food allergies or concerns. We've never yet had anyone say that their food has to be "just right."
 

Did not our hearts within us burn?

It’s likely much different today, but based on my experiences as a missionary — it was probably the casserole. 

Food for (second) thoughts

I know missionaries do their best to be polite. Elder Long and his companion came to dinner with our family. He tried hard to hide it, but it was apparent that he wasn't enamored of the main dish — nor was he a fan of most of the sides.

As he left, he thanked us for the meal and said, "The rolls were good!"

That's our new standard for feeding the missionaries. Are the rolls good?

This was us, only it was a table for seven.
 

And why are they not frozen?

I remember one area where everything we had was frozen. We hung up our laundry to dry — and it didn’t thaw out for almost a week!
 

Mealtime is a breeze!

I'm sure that even for zombies having the same thing every night could get tedious. Imagine the things you could do with Brain Helper!

Or, no. Maybe you should think of something a little less disgusting. 
 

Sketchbook: Sweet!

It occurred to me that missionaries often need to adjust to the local cuisine. I went from a bland diet at home to eating kimchi practically every day. What kinds of adjustments might other missionaries have to make?
 

Back (in your) home again

Our local missionaries have had restrictions on dinner appointments for the past several month. They've just been lifted a bit, and the elders are super excited about being able to eat with members — and not have to cook for themselves!
