The Jedi Awakens

I saved my favorites for the official Star Wars Day. Here they are —

Then there's the new hotshot pilot:

It was surprisingly difficult to draw a good Yoda. Jedi masters are like that, I guess.

Mystery girl Rey:

Andy my favorite of this series, Luke. It's subtle. His message goes without saying.

Happy Star Wars Day. And as our message says, Drive Carefully, and May the Force Be With You.

One eternal round

Yes, it's a Geek Week leftover. It won't happen again for another year!

Sketchbook: Pi for everyone!

Happy Pi Day! I thought it would be appropriate to share not just one, not just two, but 3.14* sketches today!

Have an amazing Pi Day: celebrate wisely.

*Or an approximation thereof...

Drumroll, please...

Welcome once again to Geek Week, the days leading up to Pi Day (3.14). I guess technically we're not celebrating a full week, but — like pi itself — it's an approximation.

This is a week (or time frame, if you will) where the jokes are just a wee bit nerdier than usual, more often than not leaning toward the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) end of the continuum.

And what better way to kick it off than with some of the infamous alphabet gags!*

*I apologize in advance

Sketchbook: Actress in a leading role

With the Academy Awards being last night, I thought a movie-themed sketch might be in order.

When The Force Awakens came out, I played around with a bunch of Star Wars-themed ideas. I liked this one because it shows that there's no gender bias — girls can be Star Wars geeks, too!

Enjoy Leap Day, and may the Force be with you!

Special Edition: Spacetime!

Call me a nerd, but I thought the news about the discovery of gravitational waves was really cool, especially since they were predicted in Einstein's theory of relativity.

It's fun when a genius gets proven right. But it's even better when you can throw in a Star Wars reference as well!

No spoilers

If you look on social media, everyone has a theory of where Rey came from. I say, let the genealogists have a go at cracking the clues!

The year in review: Top Ten, part I

...and here they are, the first half of this year's Top Ten! Enjoy, and have a safe and happy New Year's Eve!

No. 10
There was a specific demographic — math teachers — who really liked this cartoon.

No. 9
Somebody knows who their customers are!

No. 8
This is another one that found a peculiar audience of its own...

No. 7
Not all of the favorites were fun ones, but I had to pay respects to one of my childhood heroes.

No. 6
There's something to be said for being a modern-day pioneer. Thanks to Mary S. for this idea!

Tomorrow: the rest of the Top Ten!

It's Pi Day (approximately)

I always preferred 22 divided by 7 because it was a lot easier for me to remember than 3.141592...

Monday Sketchbook: Bazinga!

Welcome once again to Geek Week, an arbitrary week chosen due to its proximity to March 14, sometimes known in geekier circles as Pi Day — 3.14!

Cartoons this week will run toward the geeky side of the continuum (or nerdy, we're not that particular), and will likely include science or math jokes, or things of that ilk. This year, in honor of the passing of Leonard Nimoy, I'm also going to rerun a few of my favorite Star Trek gags.

Stay tuned and enjoy!

P.S. Happy birthday, Dad! You taught me that being a geek can be cool!

Trip Scrapbook No. 4

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to CERN, the largest science and research complex in the world, and home to the Large Hadron Collider, the particle accelerator that they used to find the Higgs boson.

For science geeks, it was amazing.

The LHC was undergoing maintenance, so our group was able to go down (30 stories down) to see it up close and in person. It was unbelievable. Our science teacher was over the top!

The LHC will start up again in September, so we were one of the last groups that could actually see it. A once in a lifetime experience!

If you're actually interested in seeing any of our photos, they're compiled on our Flickr site.

More Geek Week

I couldn't fit all the Pi Day cartoons into one day (that would just be wrong!), so here's another as we continue our celebration of Geek Week.

This one has a slight "think about it" pause. I'm sorry!

Pi Day!

Yes, it's Geek Week once again! Geek Week corresponds (more or less) with Pi Day, or 3.14 as some prefer to call it. (It may just be me, but does anyone else find it an unnerving coincidence that Geek Week follows hot on the trail of the bullying series from Zarahemla Times?)

Be that as it me, let's kick off our celebration of Geek Week with our first nerdy cartoon!
