Happy Pi Day! Celebrate circumspectly!

Sketchbook: Rounding it up

This is another one that's drawn from real life experiences. I've mentioned before that I work with engineers. Accuracy is paramount with them. It gets a little uncomfortable when I tell them that it's OK to round numbers up or down so they make more sense to the public.

867-5309. No, that's not it...

Does that mean she cares?

Balance to the Force

The Powers That Be (my family, mostly) have limited me to one of these alphabet gags per year, and that only during my self-proclaimed Geek Week.

Until next year!

It's all about the base

It's that dreaded time of year again! Geek Week, the week approaching Pi Day, in which we dump our bad STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) jokes in one fell swoop! The good news is, it's only one week. Enjoy!

Editor's note: Just a quick word about today's cartoon — the original caption had the girl choosing to change majors rather than deal with the harassment she receives from her peer. That was a little too close to the unfortunate reality, and not at all empowering to women who are interesting in pursuing the sciences as a career. I like this result better: it shows the social awkwardness of many males in the field (I work with engineers on a daily basis, remember), and the woman simply carries on with what she's doing.

So, yeah, sometimes a lot of thought goes into these cartoons. Go figure!

Sketchbook: Pi for everyone!

Happy Pi Day! I thought it would be appropriate to share not just one, not just two, but 3.14* sketches today!

Have an amazing Pi Day: celebrate wisely.

*Or an approximation thereof...

Everybody wave!

It's a missionary math gag — and I mean gag! (At least I didn't go off on a tangent).

Thank you for your patience. We're almost done with Geek Week. Just one day more!

Culture club

OK, maybe it's not fair to pick on Justin Bieber all the time...

Drumroll, please...

Welcome once again to Geek Week, the days leading up to Pi Day (3.14). I guess technically we're not celebrating a full week, but — like pi itself — it's an approximation.

This is a week (or time frame, if you will) where the jokes are just a wee bit nerdier than usual, more often than not leaning toward the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) end of the continuum.

And what better way to kick it off than with some of the infamous alphabet gags!*

*I apologize in advance

It's Pi Day (approximately)

I always preferred 22 divided by 7 because it was a lot easier for me to remember than 3.141592...

Monday Sketchbook: Bazinga!

Welcome once again to Geek Week, an arbitrary week chosen due to its proximity to March 14, sometimes known in geekier circles as Pi Day — 3.14!

Cartoons this week will run toward the geeky side of the continuum (or nerdy, we're not that particular), and will likely include science or math jokes, or things of that ilk. This year, in honor of the passing of Leonard Nimoy, I'm also going to rerun a few of my favorite Star Trek gags.

Stay tuned and enjoy!

P.S. Happy birthday, Dad! You taught me that being a geek can be cool!

Sharing the fruits of the labors

I promise this is the last Pi Day joke...this year.

Of course, that means I have another year to think up more!

More Geek Week

I couldn't fit all the Pi Day cartoons into one day (that would just be wrong!), so here's another as we continue our celebration of Geek Week.

This one has a slight "think about it" pause. I'm sorry!

Pi Day!

Yes, it's Geek Week once again! Geek Week corresponds (more or less) with Pi Day, or 3.14 as some prefer to call it. (It may just be me, but does anyone else find it an unnerving coincidence that Geek Week follows hot on the trail of the bullying series from Zarahemla Times?)

Be that as it me, let's kick off our celebration of Geek Week with our first nerdy cartoon!

So, what is Fibonacci? Find out here.

Life of Pi

Happy Pi Day! Go celebrate and buy yourself a pie...or two! Or wait until July 22 and celebrate Approximation Day. Either way, enjoy!

It's futile

I tried to warn you. Geek Week may not be pretty.

Today's cartoon honors Dr. Georg Ohm and Ohm's Law, which describes electrical resistance. I'm sorry.
