Our local missionaries challenged us to come to conference with questions. And with everything going on in the world, I'm sure we each have questions.

And remember, one of the best ways to ask your questions — and to get answers — is through prayer.

Sketchbook: Sweet and sour

For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it's been a roller coaster these past few days. Looking forward to General Conference, BYU winning a tight match against Colorado in a great game, the passing of Pres. Nelson, and then the horrific mass shooting and subsequent fire at the meetinghouse in Michigan — all against the background of studying D&C 107 and 109 in Come, Follow Me and again looking forward to General Conference!

Many of us, I'm sure, have spent a lot of time on our knees over the past day or two — with more to come!

I find comfort in one of Pres. Nelson's recent messages: "The best is yet to come, my brothers and sisters, because the Savior is coming again. The best is yet to come as we fully turn our hearts and our lives to Jesus Christ."

Let's pray for our brothers and sisters; let us pray for ourselves, our families and our neighbors. Let us pray for the members and helpers in Michigan. And then let us work to make those prayers come to pass!

These days it seems risky to go anywhere without first saying a prayer, if you know what I mean!
 

Sketchbook: Our menu options have changed

Ever feel like Heavenly Father might be too busy with other things, or that there are other prayers higher up in triage than yours?

One of the first times I remember my prayers being answered was when I was about five years old. There was some toy that I had lost. I searched everywhere, but to no avail. I was in despair.

But then I said a prayer, and as soon as I opened my eyes, there it was — in a place I looked a billion times before. My prayer was answered.

Since that time, I’ve remembered that if Heavenly Father took the time to answer that simple child’s prayer, he would be there for me whenever I needed him. Even if it was outside regular office hours.

 

The power of prayer?

I'm going with some favorite reruns this week while I'm on vacation.

Is this based on a real life experience? Maaaaybe.

That’s one thing about Enos. Yeah, he prayed a long time, but what he prayed wasn’t just fill material. In my home ward as a kid there was a wonderful brother who could easily pray for fifteen to twenty minutes (and often did), but most of it was fluff.  

When Enos prayed, his prayer had substance. It went “high that it reached the heavens.” That’s the kind of prayer to aspire to.
 

A prayer for the children

It's that most wonderful time of the year, when classmates share colds with classmates, co-workers share colds with co-workers, and family members share colds with everyone! But the good news is, as soon as cold season is over, allergy season begins!
 

Line upon line

And sometimes, that's all you need!
 

A little louder for those in the back

I had a friend named Blair in high school. He played the trumpet. I thought that was kind of funny, in a homonymic kind of way.

Sometimes there's just nobody else you need to talk to!

Out of all those critters, the most dangerous I ever encountered were the squirrels.

Light the World: The Gift of Prayer

As Elder Peter M. Johnson said: "Every day, every day, every day."

It's such a benefit to be able to pray, to talk with and receive answers from our Father in Heaven! Take the time each morning and spend some time on your knees.
 

Conference Prep: Did you think to pray?

Pres. Eyring said, "The first, the middle and the last thing to do is pray." 

As you look for answers to questions you've been pondering, pray to hear the answers. General conference is a great time to get those answers.

Pray to feel the spirit. Pray to be in tune. 

And remember, it never hurts to give a prayer of thanks!
 

Forward thinking

When my dad was in the military he said that every morning he would pre-pray for whatever food he would eat that day — 'cause he often had no idea of when or where he might eat. This is kind of along those same lines, right?

 

Doing us the good we need

Just remember: they'd probably be worse for us if we didn't pray!
 

One step at a time

We had quite a discussion on forgiveness in our Sunday school class last week. Forgiveness is an easy concept to understand, but it's much more difficult to put into practice. Sometimes you do have to take it in layers.
