Sketchbook: Happy New Year!

I don’t remember for certain, but the past few years it’s seemed like an accomplishment to a make it through to the end of the year. 

Congratulations on making it to 2023. Things can only get better, right?!

My teaching pool is frozen

As a missionary in Korea, I got transferred to a new area right before Christmas, and my companion and I were both new to the area — we didn't know anyone. The transfer carried over into the new years — January 1 and the Lunar new year — so the entire transfer felt like one long holiday season. That was the hardest time ever to try to find people to teach!

We all have that one friend who knows how to make our life better, at least as far as they're concerned...

Goals and aspirations

There are some times as I read the Book of Mormon that I can see why Laman and Lemuel were often cheesed off at Nephi. Anyone who has had a little brother knows that they can be obnoxious, tattle tales and showoffs. I'm pretty sure these two guys felt that way about Nephi!

One I can keep!

It's a good idea to make at least one resolution that's easy to keep!

Boring technical note: In case you're wondering, I'm trying out a new pen I got for Christmas. I like it so far!

It's 설날 (Seollal)! Happy Year of the Horse!*

The Lunar (or Korean) New Year is one of the biggest holidays in the country. It was also the first one I experienced, except I was so new I had no idea what was happening -- my experience was more like Sis. Kerry Jo's here!

There are all kinds of traditional games that they play and traditional foods that they eat. And of course it's a time to visit family -- there's also a tradition of children bowing to their parents to honor them...and to get little gifts!

Enjoy your new year. Party safely!

What's new?

We're still within the first week of the year. How well are those resolutions coming along?

New Year's Rockin' Eve

My first New Year as a missionary was in the MTC. We were set to travel the next day, so we were up to see the new year come in. Our celebration was more about being deployed rather than the new year. The second new year was more like this one. In Korea, the real celebration is the Chinese New Year. January 1 was just a reason to get a new calendar.

Monday Sketchbook: Passing the baton

I saw a survey that said a majority of people expect 2012 to be better than 2011 -- because things couldn't get much worse.

I am the world

I remember being thrilled in college when I found that a faculty member had clipped some of my cartoons and pasted them outside of his office. This wasn't amongst them. In fact, I don't know why this cartoon even made me think of that...

Think of it as service

Like a lot of cartoonists, I get many of my ideas from real life experiences. I wish some of them -- like this one -- were not rooted in reality. But I'm sure you know someone who is just like this. If not, I can introduce you!
