I had to create this picture of an elephant at a computer for a project at work. All that we needed there was the illustration. But as I look at it, it seems to me that it really needs a caption! And that's where you come in, dear reader — come up with a caption!

Evolution of an illustration

I had to illustrate an article about computer security. Here's my first attempt.

I recently attended a 21st century communications conference in Portland that featured all kinds of speakers and presenters ranging from professional tweeters to Intel's futurist, who helps plan the computerization of tomorrow. The verdict is that social media is here to stay, and is an important part of the mix in modern communications.

One of the challenges nowadays is reaching people who live off the grid. How do you communicate with the person who isn't on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Linked In? I think here I may have found the answer.

LIfe isn't fair

This is the second of two cartoons I did for a computer security article. Can you imagine the dilemma of the rich guy who's trying to give away his money but no one will take it?

Career change

I was asked to come up with a cartoon to accompany an article about protecting yourself from being scammed online. OK, so the phishing joke is nothing new, I realize that. But I like the part about running off to become a Nigerian prince!

Take note, Apple

I saw a young woman who was about nine months pregnant struggle to use her laptop computer a little while back. She just couldn't get comfortable (uncomfortable at nine months? Amazing!). It reminded me of this old cartoon I did a while back that I didn't use earlier because (a) I was a little unsure on the medical terminology, and (2) I wasn't sure it would be in good taste.

Considerations aside, here it is. It may not be a bad idea for a product, although it may have a limited -- and brief -- target audience.

Monday Sketchbook: Why are we here?

I've been on the road quite a bit this past little while, and a lot of the places I stayed didn't have WiFi. When I sat down in the chapel at the ward I was visiting, all of my iThings suddenly sprang to life! I was excited to see all my emails and other notifications popping up on my screen...until I remembered that I was in the chapel. Oops!

To Like or Unlike, that is the question

The unthinkable happened.

You know the computer user adage to always back up your data? I do.

In fact, I was in the middle of uploading a few cartoons from my workhorse USB drive, after which I was going to make a backup. I stopped to take a break for just a minute.

That’s when it happened. My laptop hurled itself off the table and crashed onto the floor below!

Luckily, the laptop was fine.

That’s because the USB took the brunt of the blow.

The little indicator light on the drive flickered weakly as if to say goodbye, then shuddered and closed its eyes for good.

Sigh.

As a result of being unable to (a) upload everything and (b) backup the new stuff, I’m forced to take drastic measures. While I attempt to recover and recreate the gags that were lost (at least I still have the hard copies), I’ll be running some old favorites.

Give me a week or so, and we’ll stop the reruns and return to our regular programming.

Unless there’s someone out there who knows how to resurrect a damaged USB drive…?
